Ways To Learn Ballroom Dancing

With all the recent television shows on dance, ballroom dancing has made a great comeback. The dancers on TV make the steps look so easy and fun, we all think we could do it. It really isn’t easy but it is fun. It may take a while, but you can learn ballroom dancing. Most communities have classes or if you’d prefer, there are DVD’s available to learn from at home.

You have probably heard of the Tango. This is a very sensual dance with the dancers being very close together, especially at the hips or chest. At other times during the dance, they may be a little further apart. As with all dancing, it is vital in the Tango for them to be in complete sync with each other and with the music.

For a romantic dance, select the waltz. This is usually performed in time featuring very flowing movements. Perhaps you have heard of the ‘box step.’ This is the fundamental step in the waltz, which basically maps out the dance. It gets its name from the fact that a ‘box’ is formed with the couple’s feet. Picture this: The man steps forward with his left leg, then to the left then back, then to the right. This forms the box. (The woman dancer does the opposite.) This dance can be performed to faster paced music but has recently been done more slowly.

Also a romantic dance choice is the Foxtrot. A slower dance, the steps take two beats of music followed by quick steps that take one beat. From this dance we get ‘Slow, slow, quick, quick.’ This dance is usually done to big band music but other genres can also be the backdrop.

For a more upbeat, fast dance choose the Cha-Cha. This Latin dance is very energetic and involves a lot of hip movements. There are five steps per four beats of music. From this we get the well-known phrase ‘One-Two-Cha-Cha-Cha.’

There are other ballroom dances: The Mamba, the Samba and the Salsa to name a few. There are several common features to these styles, but they all have certain qualities that make them all unique. Watching seasoned dancers combine several styles into one performance can be a lot of fun.

If you want to learn ballroom dancing, check out some of the many DVDs and videos that are out. It is a good idea to go and watch others dancing to get a feel for it. The best way is probably to go to some classes. Get a partner and head on over! If you have no partner, that’s okay too. Classes will always have other singles to pair up with. Have fun!
